Greenhouse gas mitigation occurs directly and indirectly in this project. Initiation of the project by Verdant Energy Ltd., directly mitigates greenhouse gases by diverting biomass that would have decomposed anaerobically to form methane gas. CO2 is indirectly mitigated through the electricity produced by the biomass power plant that is sold to the Alberta electricity grid, which offsets electricity that would have been produced through the combustion of fossil fuels.
