The opportunity for generating carbon offsets with this project arises from the direct greenhouse gas emission (GHG) reductions resulting from utilizing livestock manure, animal by-products, and organic residues from food processing operations at a biogas facility for the production of methane—or biogas—as a biological replacement of natural gas. Biogas produced at the plant will be processed through cogeneration units in order to generate electricity and thermal energy to be sold as a source of renewable energy to the Alberta grid and to local consumers, respectively
